Camp Meeting for Parents

There will be a parent camp meeting on Thursday the 9th of March at 5 - 5.30pm in Room 4 (next week Thursday). We ask the parents who are transporting and helping on camp to attend as we will be discussing the travel arrangements as well.

Home Learning

Mihi - Check on your google drive/other learning areas folder. You will find a mihi template. See if you are able to fill in the gaps relating to your family and where you are from. You may need help with the mountain or river you associate with. Learn to say your mihi fluently and we will record it at school.

Religious Education
Ask your parents if you can make pancakes at home on Tuesday. Explain to your family the significance of Shrove Tuesday. If you are allowed to measure the ingredients, then that is extra maths as well.

Mathematics
Maths Whiz for 20 minutes, three times a week. If you have completed the recommended time, try the other activities like challenging another person to a game of maths.

Go to freerice.com and click on the maths subject. Give the multiplication a go.

Reading
You should have your reading log on your google drive/reading folder (this was what you had to do two weeks ago). Keep recording what you are reading. Do you notice a pattern yet? Set yourself a reading goal around the types of books you are reading. For example, if you read mostly comics, then you might set a goal around reading a short novel or factual texts.

Spelling
On Friday you were given a spelling test. On Monday you will get the results and have a list of words to learn over the next two weeks. As you will all have an individual word list to learn, you will type these on your google drive on Monday so that you have access to these words at home. For those who have most or all the words correct, I have a list of challenging words for you to learn.

Home Learning
This has been renewed for the next two weeks. Home Learning is an extended link to learning in the classroom and will enhance what children are doing at school. I have changed the name from homework to Home Learning so that children see it as a positive extension to their learning - at home, or indeed wherever they are as they can access their learning online.

Cards for St John's Community
Room 3 have been writing letters for the St John's community and these will be delivered this week. I was very impressed by the heartfelt sadness the children expressed in their letters and I'm sure the St John's community will appreciate the children's messages.

This message came from the people doing the rafting.

The rafting run from Firmin Field  Kawerau, on the Tarawera River , and is based where they train white water paddlers, so there is a walking track that follows the stretch of river from start to finish.
It is Level 1-2 so fairly benign, there are a number of small rapids .We use highly experienced paddlers who work well with children. The rafts are seriously big, and the reality is that the children are lucky to get their paddles in the water, most of the work is done by the staff member steering and they do not get wet, other than their hands.

Homework

Homework will be renewed every two weeks.

Mathematics: Complete 20 minutes of Maths Whiz three times a week.

Spelling: On Monday you will find out which group you are in and you will be shown the Essential spelling lists. Everyone will begin learning words on the spelling lists which can be found on the Learning site. There will be a number of words you know already, so ask someone at home to test you and then make a list of the words you don't know and concentrate on those. Move up the lists until you have a lists of 20 - 30 words to learn over the next two weeks.

Group A - learn to spell all the words on list 2 first and then move onto list 3
Group B - learn to spell all the words on list 3 first and then move onto list 4
Group C - learn to spell all the words on list 4 first and then move onto list 5 and 6
Group D - learn to spell all the words on list 5 first and then move onto list 6 and 7

Go to freerice.com on the spelling site for 10 minutes three times a week to do vocabulary practice.

Reading: Read a book of choice for at least 15 minutes a day. Try to get into a reading routine that works with sports and other after school activities. Eg, you might read for 15 minutes before dinner or in bed before you go to sleep.

Create a reading log in your google drive where you can keep a record of which books you read. Include the title, author and whether the book is fiction or non-fiction. This will allow you to check that you are reading a range of different types of books, articles or other texts.

Topic: Choose one community that you belong to and create a poster, slide show, powerpoint etc to show how you fit into that particular community.

  • Describe the community.
  • What is your role in the community?
  • Who are the members of the community?
  • Why is this community important to you?
You will share your presentation to a group of children in two weeks time.
